An invitation to cyberactivism by Somaliland cyberspace
|
The Internet has become the mother lode of mass transfering of messages and images of products and causes. The medium combines speed, storage, low cost and reach. The combination of the Internet and cyberactivism has the potential in empowering activists and communities and in eroding geographical borders by reaching people in all corners of the globe. The cause of Somaliland, that of seeking of its international recognition, however, has not benefited by much from this powerful yet accessible communication tool. To improve in the area of cyberactivism, I am presenting a webpage containing a long list of E-mail and website addresses for cyberactivists amongs us. The contact information include those of the most powerful and influential people in the world. It took a long time to put together this list. Please put it into some use by writing to these entities concerning Somaliland's diplomatic limbo. Somaliland's story Tell them about Somaliland's predicament: where it is located at, about its irreversible de facto independence, some of the progress being made in democratic political development, and the kind of neighorhood it is situated in. Tell them recognizing Somaliland is the key to finding a durable political settlement in the whole Horn of Africa. For example, the warring factions in Somalia will not end their armed struggles, which is about who will seize the seat of the ousted dictator Siyad Barre in the way of presiding over the affairs of the former Somalia, and, by extension, all Somali-inhabited areas in the Horn of Africa, as long as the status quo stays the same. Hence, recognizing Somaliland will serve as a disincentive in continuing the warfare and it will lead the Somalia's groups to making a lasting peace. Resolving the political crisis, in addition, is the antidote to the expanding international terrorism. As in Afghanistan, transnational terorrism thrives in Islamic, war-torn countries. So recognizing Somaliland will certainly engender both regional political reconciliation and improved general security in the whole region. Tell the members of the U.S. Congress, specifically, to pass this 1998 House resolution, Concerning Economic, Humanitarian, and Other Assistance to Northern Somalia. Tell them also it needs both trade and aid. Tell them that as a steadfast partner to America's War on Terror, Somaliland is deserving of America's diplomatic, economic and humanitarian support. It is important to underscore the fact that this support will not in any way prejudice on Somalia's territorial unity as the endless warfare there is less to do with rebuilding Somalia and more about Somalia's irrendentism: Seizing the state power in all Somali-inhabited regions in the Horn, including in Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somaliland. This ideology, however, has long been discredited in the Horn. The French-colonized Djibouti was the first to vote for independence - and turned out to be very lucky in escaping the horrors of the Somalia's 1988-1991 civil war - in 1977. Djibouti has since remained war-free and stable, and it will never consider joining Somalia. The much ruined Somaliland finally followed suit in 1991 by reclaiming its historic land and population that was colonized by Great Britian from 1886 to 1960 as British Somaliland. Somaliland too has been largely peaceful since 1991 in spite of the continuous meddling by and military incursions of Somalia's warring groups. Since the core of Somalia's problem is the post-colonial irrendentism, a bold action like recognizing Somaliland will only force the Italian-established and oriented Somalia to resolve its internal political crisis by doing away with its irrendentism and making peace with itself and with all its neighbors. Thus, granting of recognition to Somaliland will only serve as a stimulus for ending armed conflicts and humanitarian crisis in both Somalia and Somaliland and the rest of the Horn. If you don't tell them, no one will! Good luck
